Any song is the composer's message to its listeners. But when the listeners themselves respond with such candor and depth and when the same come from a diverse section of the listening public, the song ceases to become just one song among many. It becomes AN ANTHEM OF LIFE - yes, RAINBOW, THE SONG, IS AN ANTHEM OF LIFE.
No other song in recent memory has gone through such a solid, upscale journey.
After only a few months since its initial airplay, multi-awarded band South Border's chart-busting single, "Rainbow", finally received its biggest feat to date --- it garnered the coveted "Song of the Year" award in the recently concluded SOP Awards.
Very fitting, indeed, especially for a song that has phenomenally swept across the nation and has touched millions of hearts.
The Rainbow's Making
The work of musical geniuses Jay Oliver Durias, the band's resident keyboardist and musical director, and Sharon Inductivo, the band manager, the song has been hailed by music aficionados as one of the songs that need not have anything to do with sex, drugs or alcoholism to make its message known. Rainbow boasts of a lot of positive attitude, a catchy tune and solid vocal variety and poetry-like lyrics.
Just like its title, the entire song has a charming, magical feel to it, has a beautiful message to convey and has its own appeal. With artful arrangement, simple but meaningful lyrics, Rainbow boasts of compelling, powerful vocals by Jay Durias, Vince Alaras and Duncan Ramos that meshed with skillful guitar playing by Tata Balane and Butch Victoriano, silky percussions by Paul Benitez and dulcet sax tones by Ric Junasa.
Of course, no other group could be prouder but South Border's multitude of loyal and persistent fans and supporters, who all readily gave their thumbs-up to what many regarded as the song that brought the promise of redemption.
Included in the promotion of the "Crying Ladies" movie, Rainbow also landed on the top spot of MYX's OPM Hit Chart, onMTV's Top 10 countdown and on national and local radio charts. The song is now one of the favorites in every South Border gig and is one of the most downloaded ring tunes/ring tones for SMART cellular phone service subscribers.
Heartwarming feedback
"I won't argue it being proposed as the national anthem", beamed Crissa, an AdMU student. "The song cleared up millions of hopeless sighs for our future".
"Rainbow is perfect for people who feel depressed, who think that life simply sucks or for those who feel bad about themselves. It reminds me not to blame God but instead have more faith in Him", stressed Bianca, a fan from General Santos City.
Bem, drummer of PLB band, said that the song was "a reminder not to take every bad thing that happens to us too seriously. It's about making every moment wonderful despite the crap that all of us have to endure in our everyday lives".
"Rainbow gives me a better view of the blessings in life", said Chelle, a fan based in the United States of America.
The song is, indeed, an inspiration for many.
"There really is hope, there really are reasons for everything and that no matter how hard we fall, no matter how many heartaches we encounter, there'll always be something good that'll come out in the end", Shayne said.
Rainbow also has a much deeper role in some people's lives.
Irene, who works for a major telecoms company, shared that the song helped her get through the sadness of losing a father. "It was really very traumatic but the song literally was my rainbow during and after the great storm". Lee, whose brother died last year, also finds herself remembering him every time she hears the song.
Davaoeña fan, Emerald, realized that it was time for her to undergo a paradigm shift while fellow Davaoeña Krizanne shared, "it's probably the only song that keeps me on my feet and reminds me never to give up on my dreams. I failed in a lot of things already but this song made me see something nothing else was able to let me see".
UP student Patti, meanwhile, explained that at one point in her life, she cursed herself for not being the beauty-and-brains type of girl. "Rainbow made me realize that I was so focused with negative things that I forgot all the blessings that I have in my life --- my family, my friends, the beautiful world around me".
Patty, a middle child, often found herself in a bind. She said that she was often taken for granted by her parents and was left to fend for herself. "But the song made me realize that I perhaps am one of the rainbows that my parents see. They leave me alone because I am responsible enough. Everyone has a role to portray and I have learned to accept my role."
The song also served as that "light at the end of the tunnel" for Julie, a mother of 2. "I felt that I've reached the normal wear and tear of a person. And then I realized that I don't have the right to surrender because I chose to be a mother and I love being one. Rainbow guided me as I pondered on those insights".
Loyal fan Joyce, also an AdMU student, said, "Rainbow is a song that aims to share to its listeners the beauty that lies beyond dullness, the light that shines beyond darkness and the love that glimmers beyond pain"
Indeed, Rainbow has captured a lot of hearts, has served as the beacon for many and has affirmed South Border's evolution into a band that could offer much, much more! A song with introspective lyrics, a song that reminds the listener of humanity and humility, a song simply "born" to be a smash hit.
Truly, the multi-awarded band's chart-busting contribution to the music industry is truly a seven-course meal of a song, the anthem of life.
